How is Orip doing?

15 April 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

Various people are asking us how Orip is doing, the boy from Kupang that we mentioned earlier. Orip has a Meningocele in his nek, which requires an urgent operation. A few weeks have passed since our first call to help Orip. Since then, our team worked very hard to organize all the right papers and gathered the family for consultation. As many other times, situations change in Indonesia and need some adjustments.

Our scout Nicsone went on a house visit when Orip was living with his aunt at the time, and not his grandma. His parents divorced and his mother is now living on another island. During the primary investigations in the Siloam Hospital in Kupang, the doctors concluded that an operation in Jakarta would be the better solution. For Kolewa this meant a too expensive option and moreover, it would be too complicated to guide Orip during this process.

Through the local media a call was made for help, leading to a conversation with a delegation of the Indonesian BRI bank, the family and our scout. The BRI bank offered to help Orip in a private hospital with accommodation for some family members. At that moment we, as Kolewa, decided to transfer some of the responsibilities to the BRI bank.

In the meanwhile, they travelled to Jakarta and we will be informed about Orip’s progress. The reactions to our call for help were very heart warming and kind, in total an amount of 500 euros were donated. A part of the donation is given to the preparations of Orips medical journey and the rest of the amount will be used for a new call for help: a newly born baby from Bali with hydrocephalus. We hope to realize an operation this month for the baby to place a shunt. Ofcourse we will keep you posted about all the progress!

Thank you so much for your interest and gifts!

Public award for interns of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences!

29 March 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

Our speach-therapy students from the period of september until december 2016 are already back home and busy with proccessing their experiences and study results during their time at the Kolewa Foundation in Bali.

A few weeks ago, Thiarda and Sanne promoted Kolewa to younger students at the ‘worldcafé’ at the Hanze University and recently they presented their research results with together with Hilde. Their teachers were very happy with the results and gave them a very high ranking (an 8 in Dutch terms) which nominated them for two prices. In the meanwhile they already won a public price which also made us, the Kolewa Foundation, very proud! Every week we use the sign-book that they made for us during their research, in collaboration with our team in Indonesia! Great work Thiarda, Hilde and Sanne! We are very proud of you!

Orip is still alive: a miracle. Give him a chance on a normal live!

22 March 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

Orip Bifel was born on the 5th of june in Timor, a 2 hours distance from the city Kupang. That something was wrong with his health, was quickly noticeable because of the growing bump in his neck. It grew rapidly without someone taking action. Poverty and ignorance, denial and hope for better times? At Kolewa we already heard a lot of reasons in the past years. Mostly we heard that people felt ashamed and had  no money available for treatment.
That Orip is alive right now is a miracle. Normally a child with this form of meningocele, related to spina bifida (open back) and hydrocephalus (fluids in the brain) does not live for this long.
Currently, Orip is staying with his grandma in Soe with a vicar. With this vicar we are developing a plan that will lead to an operation and a solution. First, all the right papers must be arranged, but luckily we are making progress. Orip’s grandma, of age and without an income, is responsible for the daily care of the child. This is also something we see a lot in Indonesia. When having a disease or a malfuntion, the parents distance themselves and the grandparents are being taken in responsibility for the child.
Orip and his grandma will have a safe haven at Kolewa during his treatment. There they will find a team full of compassion and knowledge of the collaboration with the Sanglah Hospital and their qualified doctors.
Also after the operation Orip will get enough time to recover and to be himself again.
The attention and activities will do him good and will give him a regained self-confidence. But also imagine the progress he will make if the enormous bump of fluids can be removed! It would mean that Orip could live normally again… move normally again, sleep again and LIVE again!
At this moment we need approximately 750 – 1000 euros to pick him up, provide him shelter, Ensure his medical care and for consulting the doctors. This is possible, but only with your help! Open your heart…. imagine it would be your child!

For a future with a smile!

In Indonesia, many children are still waiting for surgery or medical help. Children with schisis, hearing problems, severe physical deformations due to burns, spina bifida or anus atresia. Our goal is that they can grow up like any other child. Kolewa is totally dependent on donations. For 550 euros it is possible to operate a child with schisis. With each amount you can make a difference. Support Foundation Kolewa. Give them a future with a smile!
