Kolewa Foundation wishes you a fantastic 2018

31 December 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

On behalf of the board of Kolewa Foundation we wish all of our Kolewa-friends, donors, sponsors and volunteers a very nice new year and a healthy en prosperous 2018.

We look back on a great year with lots of positive experiences and results. Without your involvement we would not have succeeded. Our thanks for that.

In Indonesia our team of the Yayasan Kolewa Harapan Indonesia ended the year with a nice dinner, including the students and volunteers from Holland. it was a warm and spontaneous evening with a real family feeling, and Heldy, as a guest of hounour. She was adressed with great respect by Syta Plangting, one year after her far-reaching operation in Perth.

On to 2018…there is a lot on our program. We trust that we can continue all our activities with the same enthusiasm, knowing that we can count on your support!

kind regards,

Syta, Clara, Andre, Manon en Angela, board members of Kolewa Foundation

Code Red for Bali, we need money for emergency aid

29 November 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

Bali has turned upside down. After a short period of relative calm the vulcano had become very active. Code red has been issued again and thousands of people went to the refugee- camps in the past days. Heavy ash rains came down on the area around the mountain. Crops have been buried under a grey mass and rivers are polluted and poisoned by the cold lava flows. This wil cause longterm problems.

Kolewa Foundation visits the camps in Karangasem since september. The number of evacuees are even bigger now and the circumstances more poignant. We bring food, personal care products and tarpaulins, for the children also crafts materials and toys.

For emergency aid we need money, per day of outreach we spent about 8.000.000 – 12.500.000 idr (500 – 800 euro). With this we can provide 6 camps with a stock of vegetables, oil, tempeh, salted fish, coffeem tea, mie, washing powder, soap etc. etc. With tarpaulins (the rain season has started with heavy rain showers) we will need another 125 euro per day. At this moments we go 1 to 2 times a week depending on sufficient donations. This frequency is not enough.

We maken an inventory in advance for medication and pain killers. There are many elderly with problems, but also lack of hygiene, good toilets and showers and the rain is cause of diseases and inconveniences.

We do our groceries on the market to keep our costs low. The sellers already know us. For transportation we use our own Kolewa Medicar and our schoolbus and yes, before going up into the mountains petrol must be refueled.

It’s CODE RED, for the Balinese people and for our available budget. Your help is indispensable, therefore we ask you, to take action and encourage your friends and family, beside your own donation.

Take action together with us because IF the big blow comes and Mount Agung bursts….then we we will have to be able to give even more help. Then it’s not only about emergency aid. Then it’s about reconstruction and giving people new chances for an existence. An existence that many have already lost at this moment!

Alor, our first mission is done!

2 November 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

Alhor, our first mission is done and enough work is waiting for us!

On October the 28th a Kolewa delegation traveled to the Island Alor for the first time. From Denpasar(Bali) we had a  short stop in Kupang (Timor) and flew to Mali-airport. It was a thrilling flight because of the hard wind and a short landing strip. Especially the Indonesian team members didn’t feel well, but luckily they recovered fast.

We managed to get the help of one our local contacts, Zarus and driver Frenky, who were waiting fur us near the exit. Zarus arranged a car, made reservations at a hotel and already made some other preperations to locate children with a cleft lip.

Alor is a beautiful Island that is barely noticed by tourists yet and has a wonderful coast, seven gorgeous diving spots and has a pearl industry.  The people are friendly, approachable, live in simpel conditions and have restricted medical healthcare (not to mention plastic surgery). Alor has a relaxt atmosphere and looks some way Jamaican, because of the many rasta hairstyles we saw during our stay. Approximately 15 diffrent languages are spoken, called: ‘Papuan’. Luckily, Zarus speaks Bahasa Indonesia and a little bit English.

We went to local accomodations and restaurants. Sleeping, showering en toilet-use were not pleasant. However the food was very good (in Indonesian: ‘enak’). Our stay was at Hotel Kenari, which we cannot recommend for western people, but it was (sort of) acceptable (as other options were not availabe).

Our new scout prepared very well for our visit. We visited many consultation clinics and scouted multiple cleft lip children. Three of them we took with us to Bali for an operation. Next, we sailed to the Island Kepa and visited in Alor-Kecil a traditional village.

Soon it became clear to us that we are one of the first NGO’s with a focus on children with congentinal physical impairments. Posters and other information were happily received and hung up on the walls. Many people know potential patients we can help and therefore we decided to add Alor to our region we provide care to in Indonesia.

On the fourth day of our journey, we said goodbye to Zarus and offered him to continue ase a scout for our Indonesian organisation Yayasan Kolewa Harapan Indonesia. This young man, with background in architecture and without any current job or income, has pleasantly surprised us during our journey. He accepted our offer with big enthusiasm. Shortly, we will try to visit Alor again to pick up the next delegation of children we scouted. Two are on the wating list: a boy with a open palate and a girl with hydrocephalus.

Safety First!

17 October 2017 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

The way in which the shelter home of Kolewa Foundation is run, definitely shows Dutch influence. The team has learned a lot about hygiene, healthy nutrition, regularity and working together towards a good living environment. However, unexpected situations can always arise and, according to good Dutch practice, there has to be be a plan in place. Intern Glenn is helping team leader Ana create an emergency escape plan poster and a local company was called in to install fire extinguishers. On 2 October, the entire team, including ‘our’ business administration student from Groningen, took part in a fire prevention and fire fighting course.

It has been a very valuable experience for all of us. Of course we hope it will never happen but being somewhat prepared for an emergency situation is much better than being at a loss if it ever does.

For a future with a smile!

In Indonesia, many children are still waiting for surgery or medical help. Children with schisis, hearing problems, severe physical deformations due to burns, spina bifida or anus atresia. Our goal is that they can grow up like any other child. Kolewa is totally dependent on donations. For 550 euros it is possible to operate a child with schisis. With each amount you can make a difference. Support Foundation Kolewa. Give them a future with a smile!
