Adinda finished her internship with a brochure about Down Syndrome!

4 August 2018 door Syta Plantinga Leave a Comment

Student Adinda did an internship at Kolewa en created a beautiful flyer concerning Down Syndrome:

Folder Down Syndrom feedback

During the third year of her educational program Social Work and Services Adinda had to make a professional product: the treatment plan. The goal of the assignment was that she would focus on writing a plan for the client including activities which would connect to the needs of the client and the Kolewa foundation. Adinda chose to make a development plan for Wellem.

In the social work branch the work is mainly methodical. Methodical work happens in several steps. Information has to be collected, an analysis of the client has to be made, the needs and goals have to be set, activities need to be plannend and the implementation and analysis of these plans need to be made as well as the adjustment of the needed guidance and support.

This assignment is meant to show that the student can use the knowledge he/she has gained in practise and to get more skilled in writing a plan. For the treatment plan Adinda focused on Wellem. Willem is a 4-year-old boy who has anusatresie and the Down Syndrome. His mother and the staff of Kolewa had little or no clue of what this Syndrome meant and what Wellem could and couldn’t do. Wellem’s mother had a lot of attention for him and therefore Wellem had little space to make mistakes and to develop himself. Adinda made an activity schedule for improvement both physically as wel as metrically. The focus in this scheme was at learning to walk, learning to communicate by using sign language and the metric improvement by practicing with this.

Adinda did not only make this activity scheme but also focused on writing an additional essay about Down Syndrome. The mother and the staff at Kolewa barely knew about the existence of this syndrome before founder and manager Syta Plantinga gave Wellem this label. Today, still a lot of Indonesian people have little or no idea about this Syndrome and how they should handle it. To try and enlarge this knowledge the student made an easy readable essay. In this essay Down Syndrome is explained, what is it, how does it develop, what are the characteristics and consequences and how is the development of a kid influenced by the syndrome. This essay is written in English with the use of easy words so that people with different educations can understand it. Of course, it is being translated in Indonesian and it is printed so that it can be used during the Out-Reach activities of Kolewa Foundation.

To end her journey and her internship, Adinda traveled to Timor to bring Wellem home after a successful treatment of Anusatresie. Even though it was hard, she eventually said goodbye to the little guy that had gained a very special place in her heart.

For a future with a smile!

In Indonesia, many children are still waiting for surgery or medical help. Children with schisis, hearing problems, severe physical deformations due to burns, spina bifida or anus atresia. Our goal is that they can grow up like any other child. Kolewa is totally dependent on donations. For 550 euros it is possible to operate a child with schisis. With each amount you can make a difference. Support Foundation Kolewa. Give them a future with a smile!
